FORT DAVIS – Travelling thousands of miles over the Big Bend region, circuit riding priests or “saddlebag ministers” as they were commonly called brought religion to this vast area. Keynote speaker Lonn Taylor will provide a historical overview in his presentation, “How Christianity Came to Fort Davis” starting at noon on Saturday, December 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The tour is sponsored by Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library and includes hourly stops at the Catholic Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church. Live music on the organ, guitar, violin, and harp will enrich the program and gingerbread with wassail will be offered at the conclusion. Each church will have guides to convey interesting stories and share memories to invite tour goers to step back in time. Limited to just 100 tickets, the Friends event is $15 in advance or $25 at the door. Registration will take place at 11:45am in St. Joseph Parish Hall.Tickets will be sold through their website, www.friendsjdcl.org or may be purchased at the post office entrance this week and next.
