PRESIDIO COUNTY – A 59-year-old Odessa man was killed in a one-vehicle rollover on a US 67 curve near the Shurley Ranch road atop Big Hill south of Marfa at about 5pm Thursday, February 28, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Dionicio Salinas Alvarez was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Juanita Bishop of Presidio and his body was taken to Memorial Funeral Home in Alpine.
Maria Vela Vasquez, 56, a passenger in the 1997 Chevrolet Suburban, was transported by Marfa EMS to Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine.
There was no word on the woman’s condition.
Highway patrol trooper Chelsea Mizell, in her accident report, calculated that Alvarez was southbound and driving at 82mph in a 70mph zone when he entered a curve near mile marker 962 and failed to negotiate it safely.
“Driver took faulty evasive action by overcorrecting to the right, re-entered the roadway and went off the roadway again on the west side,” Trooper Mizell stated. “Driver over-corrected again before overturning multiple times.”
An autopsy and toxicology report were ordered by county officials, to be performed by the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s office.
