JOHN FERGUSON
I am interested in continuing to serve as mayor because I love doing it. Additionally, Presidio is getting so close to really taking off in regard to international trade. I have been working with others in the community toward this end for several years. I really want to see this through.
I am a 32-year veteran educator with the Presidio schools, of which the last nine years have been served as Presidio High School counselor. I have served as mayor 1991-1994 and 2013-present.
I received my bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Arkansas in 1985. I received a master’s degree in trumpet from the University of Northern Iowa in 1987. I also completed the alternative certification program at Region 19 (El Paso) to become a school counselor in 2011.
I am willing to fulfill the duties for the position of mayor to the best of my abilities. Any citizen is welcome to contact me at any time (432-661-0600) in regard to concerns in our community. I work closely with local up to federal officials to address issues in our community. I also keep in close contact with authorities in Ojinaga, especially when we need to work together to solve serious problems like fire protection.
The number one issue facing Presidio is job creation. With the lack of employment opportunities, many are forced to find work elsewhere and sometimes leave Presidio permanently. The second most important issue would be the lack of emergency health services in Presidio. This is detrimental to the overall well-being of our citizens, it discourages investment in Presidio, and it puts a tremendous strain on our city budget. Finally, the third most important issue is aging infrastructure and the urgent need to update it.
I am a member of the Rotary Club. I also perform music for the community and local organizations. I am a member of the Presidio County Appraisal District Board, the Presidio International Port Authority, and serve as president of the Bechtel Book Grant committee.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, performing music, working on my cars and motorcycles, bicycling, and traveling.
I will happily give my all in serving the people of Presidio. I am always available to listen to concerns and am eager to learn about how I can better fulfill the duties of the office of mayor.
