MARFA –– Author and poet Michelle Tea and others will read from a new anthology of writers — SLUTS — at the Crowley Theater on Friday, July 12, at 9 p.m. Tea is known for her autobiographical works that explore queer culture, feminism, race, class, sex work and other topics.
The evening will open with music by Natalie Melendez and Tim Johnson, followed by readings by Vera Blossom,Tom Cole, Carley Moore, Baruch Porras-Hernandez and Tea.
SLUTS is the first book on Michelle Tea’s new imprint, Dopamine, housed by the Los Angeles-based publisher Semiotext(e) who brought French theory to America and later championed a new strain of female and LGTBQ fiction, nonfiction and poetry including such notables as Kathy Acker, Cookie Mueller, Chris Kraus, Jackie Wang, Constance Debre and Marfa writer Eileen Myles.
SLUTS: Anthology presents a diverse collection of writing — fiction and nonfiction, pro and con, philosophical and compulsive — exploring the eternally controversial word. Whether an insult or badge of honor, an identity or a state of mind, SLUTS engages some of the hottest minds of the moment to riff on the subject, exploring the nature of desire and its cultural consequences, creating a collection bound to become a classic of sex writing.
Organizers of the event thank Marfa Live Arts and the City of Marfa as well as Rob Weiner, Nick Terry and Maryam Amiryani, Tim Crowley, Sandra Harper, Charline Von Heyl, In Front of Us, Marfa Book Co. and a slew of other anonymous local and international donors for their generous and enthusiastic support.
