Marfa’s volleyball team competed in the Wink Volleyball Tournament this past weekend, facing a strong line of opponents. Marfa took on the 2024 state runner-up Wink squad to begin pool play and competed well against Midland Classical before earning their lone tournament victory Friday evening with a win over Sierra Blanca. On Saturday, the Lady Horns fought hard but came up short against Balmorhea and Crane.

Tuesday evening, Marfa traveled to McCamey for a non-district match, where they fell in a close four-set battle, 1–3. That result brings Marfa’s early-season record to 2–6.

The Lady Horns now turn their attention to the Van Horn Classic Volleyball Tournament this weekend. They are scheduled to face: Balmorhea at 9 a.m., Iraan at 12 p.m. and Crane JV at 3 p.m.

The Shorthorns are set to kick off the season with Friday night scrimmages at 7:15 p.m. at Martin Field, giving the Shorthorn fans their first look at this year’s squad.

The Horns return a strong group of varsity starters, including senior Alejandro Rodriguez, who is projected to lead the offense with his speed and experience. On the defensive side, junior Ayden Alvarez makes his return after being sidelined by injury during the 2024 season, and he is expected to be a key leader in 2025. Head coach Kevin Pippen praised the team’s depth, noting several experienced players returning to the lineup, including Asael Zubia, a standout on both sides of the ball, along with Austin McGary (receiver), Darren Campos, and “Gopher” Garry Webb.

Pippen emphasized that the Horns will lean on their speed and chemistry, while also adding new elements to their playbook designed to challenge opposing defenses. The Shorthorns coaching staff has been hard at work throughout the summer. Coach Pippen will oversee the offense, while assistant coach Arron Luna leads the defense, joined by assistants Zach Wilson and Marcus Ortega. The Horns will officially open their season on Friday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. when they host Da Vinci at Martin Field as part of Marfa Lights Weekend.
