“The Trio” will perform at Do Right Hall Thursday, December 18, at 7:30 p.m. The group includes guitarist Steve Gunn, who has played many times in Marfa, and drummer Ryan Sawyer.
Both are New York based, but Sawyer is a San Antonio native, and they both have international careers in bands and as solo artists. The trio is completed by Eileen Myles, poet, writer and Marfa resident.
The Trio began playing together in 2023, out of mutual admiration for each others’ work and a last-minute decision to improv together at Our Wicked Lady in Bushwick. The Trio has played together many times—always in New York—and opened for Deer Hoof in the Bang on a Can Festival.
In their performance Myles reads their work, mostly poems and some other writing and covers of other artists, Polish and Palestinian authors. This show is their Marfa premiere, and Myles will be performing “Ballroom,” a long poem inspired by Marfa art and international politics at the border and in Gaza. “Ballroom” will be available as a standalone pamphlet published by Dopamine of Los Angeles.
This event is supported by In Front of Us, Marfa Live Arts, Marfa Book Co., Wrong Gallery, Canarium Books, many anonymous donors, the Chinati Foundation and Ballroom Marfa.
