Four earthquakes hit near Pecos

PECOS – The U.S. Geological Survey on Sunday recorded the third and fourth earthquakes near the city of Pecos since late Friday evening. The USGS reported a 2.8 magnitude quake at 8:17 p.m. around 16.7 miles southwest of Pecos. Another 2.8 magnitude earthquake took place around 2:45 a.m. 15.5 miles southwest of Pecos. The two tremors Sunday followed a 2.9 magnitude earthquake 14.9 miles southwest of Pecos at 4:04 p.m. Saturday. The tremors started at 10:44 p.m. Friday with a 2.4 magnitude quake 5 miles south of Pecos. The four earthquakes were the first in more than a month, according to The website reports 47 in the last 365 days. A quake with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is “often felt, but only causes minor damage,” according to Upseis, an educational site for seismologists.
