PECOS – The U.S. Geological Survey on Sunday recorded the third and fourth earthquakes near the city of Pecos since late Friday evening. The USGS reported a 2.8 magnitude quake at 8:17 p.m. around 16.7 miles southwest of Pecos. Another 2.8 magnitude earthquake took place around 2:45 a.m. 15.5 miles southwest of Pecos. The two tremors Sunday followed a 2.9 magnitude earthquake 14.9 miles southwest of Pecos at 4:04 p.m. Saturday. The tremors started at 10:44 p.m. Friday with a 2.4 magnitude quake 5 miles south of Pecos. The four earthquakes were the first in more than a month, according to earthquaketrack.com. The website reports 47 in the last 365 days. A quake with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is “often felt, but only causes minor damage,” according to Upseis, an educational site for seismologists. There are about 30,000 quakes each year, according to the site.
