Elva Magallanez Alanis, 84, of Odessa and formerly of Presidio and Marfa, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Medical Center Hospital after a bout with cancer. At her side were her children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, March 15, 2019 from 1 – 9pm at Martinez Funeral Home in Odessa with Rosary to be recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 16 at 2pm at Santa Teresa Catholic Church in Presidio. Burial will follow at Santa Teresa De Jesus Catholic Cemetery in Presidio.
Elva was born to Concha and Henry Magallanez on December 16, 1934 in Presidio. She was a Marfa High School graduate where she was first chair clarinetist of the Marfa Shorthorn Band.
She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Odessa and was an active 1st grade catechist with her daughter.
Elva was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Joe R. Alanis.
She is survived by her brother, Hilario A. Magallanez of El Paso; and her four children, Joe Alanis Jr. of Quemado, Texas, Ben Edward Alanis of Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Edward Alanis of Eagle Pass, and Elizabeth Alanis-Avila of Odessa. She has 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Elva was a valued and active community member wherever she lived. In El Paso and in Presidio, she was active in booster clubs for Riverside and Presidio high schools. She was a reporter and office manager for the Presidio International newspaper and was an active member of Santa Teresa de Jesus de Avila Catholic Church in Presidio. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a cheerleader mom.
She loved crocheting, tending to her flowers, listening to music and playing piano, as well as clarinet. Most importantly, she was a loving mother and grandmother and a faithful wife and friend. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.
