McCall

Herminia Mendoza McCall, 90, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso.

A lifetime resident of Presidio, she was born April 18, 1928 in the Puerto Rico neighborhood of Presidio. She attended school at Loma Pelona and later helped her parents raise her eight younger siblings.

In 1955, she married Arthur Thomas McCall. They made their home just outside the city limits on FM 170 and lived there most of their lives there, except for a short stint of five years when work sent them to the Texas Panhandle.

They returned to Presidio in 1974.

Herminia enjoyed doing many types of needle work including embroidery, crocheting and quilting. She was an artist in her own right who loved to paint the southwest landscape. She sold several paintings, and even sketched desert scenes for a cookbook compiled by the Presidio Valley Women’s Club. Her sketches also made it onto note cards that were sold around town.

In her younger days, she was actively involved with the local group and was even honored for 57 years of service. She was instrumental in seeing the city park come to fruition and volunteered numerous hours there. One of her greatest joys was decorating the “Y” for Christmas.

Herminia will be remembered most by her family for her cooking, especially her homemade chocolate pie.

She is survived by her two sons, Geral of Presidio and Tom (Stella) of Hereford, Arizona; grandson, Michael (Jessica) also of Presidio; and three great grandchildren, McKayley, Jaden and Kaden. She is also survived by four brothers and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Thomas; her parents, Federico and Bernarda Mendoza and two siblings.

Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, March 27 at Santa Teresa Catholic Church in Presidio with internment at the family plot on the McCall Farm.

Pallbearers are Carlos Mendoza Jr., Javier Mendoza, Rene Molinar, Norberto Ornelas, Ramon Baeza and Hector Hernandez. Honorary pallbearers are Jaden and Kaden McCall.
