Please join the Chinati Foundation in celebrating Community Day this Saturday, May 4th. All events are free and everyone is invited.
From 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, exhibition spaces on the Chinati Foundation grounds, the John Chamberlain Building, and the Ice Plant will be open for self-guided viewing. At 3:30 pm, Michael Roch, Chinati’s director of education, will give a talk on John Wesley at the Wesley Gallery.
Starting at 5:00 pm, please join us for a community dinner at the Arena, with barbeque provided by Come and Take It and music and dance performances by Marfa ISD’s Blazing Horns of the Big Bend, Ballet Folklorico Aztlán, and Presidio’s Mariachi Santa Cruz.
Showcased at the Arena will be a free publication featuring comic strips created by Marfa ISD’s high school art class. After viewing work by John Wesley in Chinati’s permanent collection, students embarked on a series of comic-making lessons guided by Chinati’s education department. Using collage, pen and ink, and block prints, the students explored a variety of media to juxtapose words and images.
The resulting comics are fantastical, bizarre, often beautiful, and always funny. The students’ work is also available as a supplement in the Big Bend Sentinel this week.
