Great spring concert held Tuesday at PHS

PRESIDIO – The PHS Band, Mariachi Frontera Azul, and PHS Jazz Band performed a Spring Concert Tuesday evening. The bands were under the direction of Mrs. Lucy Ferguson and assisted by Mrs. Molly Rodriguez and “Band-aid” Mr. Ildefonso Arenivas.

Seniors, Arely Leyva and Melissa Lozano were in charge of presenting all the songs for the PHS Band, while members of the mariachi group presented their songs. Freshman Jasmine Sotelo and Sophomore Luis Ornelas presented for the jazz band.

It is tradition for Mrs. Ferguson to present a Certificate of Appreciation to the seniors and a rose to present to their mom, as a token of appreciation. Senior band members then present their band teachers with a token of appreciation as well.

The final speech to Mrs Ferguson and staff was given by Arely Leyva.

“Well, I was really glad that I presented the presentation, because since I’m a senior this is my last year, I felt kind of sad, but I am also excited for starting a new chapter in my life,” Arely said. “I have to say thank you to Mrs. Ferguson because she has always spent time with us since sixth grade. So when they gave me this speech, to me, I felt really special because I gave it from my heart.”

Senior Abdiel Carrasco participated in the PHS Band, Jazz, and Mariachi Frontera Azul. He had a solo with the Mariachi and another solo with the Jazz band members. It’s important to know that Abdiel also has his own musical group named “Nuevo Estilo”.

“At this point I always felt so confident and relaxed singing in public, I really enjoy it,” Abdiel said . “For this reason, when I graduate, I will go to Mexico to the “Universidad Autónoma De Chihuahua (UACH) to study music,” stated Abdiel after the concert.

“I felt that it was probably one of the best concerts that we had seen here in Presidio High School,” said counselor and musician and former band/Mariachi teacher John Ferguson.

“ I have being here for 32 years and it was one of the best. So they did a really great job and had all that great music with the concert band, the Mariachi Frontera Azul, and then the Jazz band. It was a wonderful year. I want to congratulate all the students and directors for the great concert,” Mr. Ferguson said.
