In era of social distancing, local radio station delivers voices of everyday Marfans

MARFA — Earlier this year, Jason “Oslo” Kolker, a volunteer at KMKB (98.9 FM), decided to start interviewing everyday Marfans, setting the interviews to music picked by the interviewees.

The goal of this project was to “choose people who weren’t typically on-air,” said Colby Martin, who helps handle social media for the station. Kolker is no stranger to the microphone, having conducted interviews on another Marfa station, KRTS, since 2009.

“With nothing to promote and no set topics of expertise, the subjects of these interviews were sometimes reluctant and oftentimes questioned, ‘Why would anyone want to hear from me?’” Martin said in an email. “The answer was always, ‘Because you are part of the Marfa community.’”

Kolker’s first interview was with Lineaus Lorette, the larger-than-life Marfan known for, among other things, his communist politics and his coterie of dogs. After hearing that interview, Neil Chavigny, owner of KMKB, decided to air the whole series.

Lorette’s interview aired earlier this year, just a few days before he passed away in late March. “I jumped at the opportunity to air his interview while he was still alive to hear it,” Chavigny said. “I’m glad I did.”

The interviews have a unique format. Kolker asked locals to pick some of their favorite songs, then played them during the interviews. It’s part-talk, part-music.

In the spirit of community togetherness — and to make sure that everyone who wants to tune into the interviews gets to — KMKB is re-airing the entire interview series starting this Friday. The schedule is as follows:
