Rene Franco

Rene Franco, age 78 and a Presidio resident, passed away August 5, 2020, at Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas. He was born in Shafter, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Maria de Jesus Franco, of Presidio; son, Rene Franco Jr. (Sylvia) of Round Rock, Texas; and daughter, Karina Padilla (Gilberto) of Davidson, North Carolina; and seven beloved grandchildren. He will now be reunited with his parents, Lucy Rede and Manuel Franco, brothers Armando and Adalberto, and sister Delfina Anderson. He is also survived by his twin brother, Rede Franco (Lupita), El Paso; brother Abelardo Franco, El Paso; Carmelina Holloway, Decatur, Texas; and Yvonne Franco Hinojos, El Paso. He attended high school in Presidio and received his BA and MA degrees from Sul Ross State University in Alpine. He was an educator and taught elementary school in Redford and high school in Presidio before becoming superintendent for the Presidio Independent School District. After retiring from Presidio public schools, he became involved in business and agriculture. He was a devout Catholic and member of Santa Teresa de Jesus Catholic Church in Presidio. To honor his personal request, he was laid to rest at Shafter Cemetery in Shafter, Texas, where he is facing his beloved Three Sisters Mountains. A Rosary service was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shafter, where Franciscan monk Pascual of Shafter also provided the graveside services.
