Lady Devils varsity basketball team rally after tough start to season

PRESIDIO — On January 5, the Lady Devils opened up district play against Tornillo at home. The final score was 36-49 in favor of Tornillo. Leading scorers were Alejandra Valles with 14 points and Sheyla Ornelas with 10 points. The loss put the team at an 0-1 start in district play.

On January 9, the Lady Devils traveled to Alpine to take on the Lady Bucks. It was a close game up until the fourth quarter where Presidio was outscored 18-9. The final score was 32-49 in favor of Alpine. Leading the way were Darinka Orona with 8 points and Iliana Morales with 6 points. The loss gave the Lady Devils a record of 0-2 in district play.

On January 12, the Lady Devils hosted the Kermit Lady Jackets. The Lady Devils held a 23-9 halftime lead. Turnovers and foul trouble in the second half cost Presidio the win. 4 of the 5 starters fouled out of the game. The final score was 38-39 in favor of Kermit. Leading the way was senior Darinka Orona with 12 points. Other scorers who contributed were Alondra Proano with 8 points and Sofia Garcia with 6 points. The loss gave the Lady Devils a record of 0-3 in district.

On January 15, the Lady Devils traveled to Anthony, TX and defeated Anthony by a score of 50-8. Leading the way was senior Alejandra Valles with 17 points. Other scorers were Sheyla Ornelas with 9, Crystal Barriga with 7 and Sherlyn Herman with 6 points. The win gives the Lady Devils a district record of 1-3.

The Lady Devils will travel to Tornillo on Friday. Tip off will be at 5 p.m.
