Suspect in custody in brutal slaying in Alpine

ALPINE — An Alpine man is currently in custody in Brewster County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony murder after local authorities say he confessed to killing a fellow Alpine resident.

On Saturday evening, Alpine police responded to a call on East Harriet Avenue on the north side of town, near Kokernot Baseball Park, that was reporting a homicide. Upon arrival, they found Jeffrey Williams, 64, deceased.

Alpine police determined Williams had “suffered trauma which was not self-inflicted,” according to a news release from Alpine PD on Monday. They quickly zeroed in on one man, Travis Rutherford, 37.

At press time, it’s not clear what caused Alpine police to suspect Rutherford in the killing. The Big Bend Sentinel is working to get more information on the case, including an incident report.

In an affidavit in the case, first reported by CBS7, authorities say Rutherford admitted to the killing. They say Rutherford admitted to shooting Williams with a bow and arrow and that he also hit Williams with a metal bat.
