MARFA — The Marfa High School girls volleyball preseason is well underway, with the junior varsity and varsity teams competing in scrimmages and tournaments across West Texas.
Last weeked, at a tournament in Bronte, the varsity team defeated Coahoma High School and placed third overall in their bracket, earning bronze medals. The Lady Shorthorns began prepping for the season this May and practiced throughout the summer. The preseason matches extend to October 1 with district play beginning October 4.
Both the JV and varsity teams consist of players in ninth through twelfth grade. This year’s seniors have been playing for the past four years and lend valuable experience and leadership to the program, said Coach Priscilla Serrano. Seniors include outside hitter Lesly Torres, libero Aundrea Garcia, setter Emily Hernandez, outside hitter Ummi Chanez and middle blockers Charlize Martinez and Alexis Gonzalez. Serrano said the teams are working hard and are hopeful they will be successful this season.
“We are looking forward to advancing further than last year. We hope to build the program and add more participants to contribute to our goals. We hope to be district champs and to make it to the regional tournament,” said Serrano.
As to how the community can support the Lady Shorthorns, Serrano said attending games and cheering on their hometown team is a great way to show up for the school’s volleyball program.
“We would like to invite the community to every game. It makes a big difference when the stands are full and the team feels the support and pride,” said Serrano.
