MARFA — Marfa ISD Athletic Director Coach Linda Ojeda will be one of six Sul Ross State University alumni, boosters and friends to be inducted into the university’s Hall of Honor for Distinguished Alumni and Athletes this year.

The university announced its 2023 inductees last week. Ojeda, Class of 2005, lettered in both basketball and softball for the Lobos. She was a four-year starter in softball, ASC All-West Division catcher (2002) and third baseman (2003-2005), the Sul Ross Defensive Player of the Year (2002) and the Sul Ross Most Valuable Player (2005).

Since her collegiate career, Ojeda has held coaching positions in the Van Horn and Marfa school districts and was named the first female athletic director in the Big Bend area in 2017. She has coached several district championship teams in Marfa.

Ojeda said Sul Ross State University has provided her with many opportunities throughout the last 20 years in the academic, athletic and professional arena.

“This honor is a reminder of how much this institution continues to do for countless alumni in the state and the gratitude it shows for the Lobos who paved the way for future generations,” said Ojeda. “I’m honored to join the many inductees of the past and I’m thankful to represent my family, former teammates, coaches, and the women’s basketball and softball program.

Chet Sample, a former Sul Ross athletic director who helps to coordinate the inductees, said Ojeda was chosen as an inductee because, in addition to being a talented athlete and student, she was instrumental in helping get the school’s softball program off the ground.

“She was a very versatile softball player who could play almost any position with little difficulty, just what the Lady Lobos needed as they were in the process of building a softball program,” said Sample in a statement to The Big Bend Sentinel. “Linda was definitely a big factor in helping Sul Ross progress through the early years of the softball program and she was also an outstanding student in the classroom. A true leader for a young program!”

Inductees will be honored in a ceremony on Saturday, March 25, that will be held on the Sul Ross campus. For more information, visit sulross.edu/alumni/lobo-night/
