PRESIDIO — Last week, sirens rang out across town as Presidians showed their support for the mission of the Big Bend Children’s Advocacy Center. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month — the official color of the commemorative program is blue, which suited the wardrobes of local Blue Devils just fine.
Municipal Judge Vivi Cataño helped organize the event with the help of Shanna Spence Sullivan, executive director for all of the Big Bend regional offices. Cataño felt it was important to get the word out — so many crimes against children go unreported because people feel afraid to speak up.
Cataño wanted a bright future for all of Presidio’s children. “We wanted to give the message to the families and to the community: stop the abuse,” she said.
Presidio High School senior Ramon Rodriguez also attended the parade with members of PISD’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He said members of his organization volunteered with children and felt it was important to protect younger members of the community. “Protecting the little ones is important, and we want to set an example of standing up for them,” he said.
