READ MARFA returns for the fall semester at Marfa ISD

MARFA — READ MARFA, the volunteer read-aloud program at Marfa Elementary, is back and looking for volunteers! Following a successful relaunch by Marfa Public Library in 2022, the program is returning to Marfa ISD in early October, expanding to serve more students and include more volunteers from the community.

READ MARFA connects adult volunteers with the school, promotes reading as a fun and enjoyable activity, and assists Marfa ISD in their goal to improve student reading and listening skills. It’s also a great way to work together to support teachers and students.

Participating volunteers commit to spending a half hour once per week, for six weeks, reading aloud to an assigned group of Marfa Elementary students during their school day. Being read to makes a big difference for kids who are learning to read themselves, but many children in Far West Texas don’t have that advantage. READ MARFA volunteers bridge the gap by reading aloud to students during their school day.

The fall session will run from October 9 – November 17. If you’d like to participate as a reading volunteer or for more information, contact Marfa Public Library librarian Jasmin Pineda at [email protected].
