MARFA — The Marfa Shorthorns claimed victory over Rankin on Tuesday night, capturing the bi-district championship in front of a sizable crowd from Marfa. The game started as a tightly contested battle, but the Shorthorns tightened their defense, leading to a scoring drought for the Red Devils.
At halftime, the score was tied at 22-22, but the Shorthorns surged ahead by 8 points at the start of the third quarter and maintained their lead, ultimately winning by 10 points with a final score of 46-36.
Key players for Marfa included Derick Campos, who contributed 14 points, and senior Dustin Martinez, who led with 15 points. The team played with a versatile and balanced offensive performance, with nearly all players making valuable contributions, including Zach Wilson with 10 points and Marco Ruiz with 5 points.
Marfa now sets its sights on the area playoff game against Robert Lee, scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. in Garden City.
