Police considered the Fort Stockton man ‘armed and dangerous’ after he fired shots at officers

PRESIDIO COUNTY — Ivan Ramos Hernandez was a highly-wanted man in Presidio County the past two weeks since he fired shots at Presidio Police Department officers chasing him on foot as he fled through the brush off of Highway 170 before crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico on February 26, according to a Facebook post from the Presidio Police Department.

Police had confronted Hernandez, 39, of Fort Stockton, at the Presidio Travel Center store on Highway 67 that day on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. But after ordering him to “show his hands,” Hernandez instead fled in the vehicle and a high-speed chase ensued. Hernandez stopped his car, hopped a fence and ultimately made it to Mexico. But his on-the-run status ended Sunday at 3:30 p.m. when a slew of officers from area law enforcement agencies descended upon him at the port of entry, according to a Presidio County Sheriff’s Department Facebook post.

Hernandez was booked into Presidio County Jail on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and fraudulent use of identifying information (identity theft). He was still in jail with combined bonds of $100,000 as of Monday afternoon, according to sheriff’s department records.

The sheriff’s department Facebook post noted: “The Presidio Port of Entry was on hold while multiple agencies participated in the warrant service including CBP officers, U.S. Marshals, Presidio Police and sheriff’s deputies as a precaution due to the commission of violent acts. Ivan Ramos Hernandez has multiple warrants for his arrest in the state including deadly conduct, and a shooting in the City of Ft. Stockton, Texas.”

Sheriff Danny Dominguez said Monday that he didn’t have specifics on the alleged shooting incidents involving Hernandez in Fort Stockton, but that if area residents saw a bevy of law enforcement vehicles racing through the county Sunday, that was why. The Presidio Police Department also had described Hernandez in its February 26 Facebook post as “armed and dangerous.” The department did not return a request for more information Monday. However, the department’s post outlined more details on Hernandez for the February 26 incident: “A search of the car was conducted, finding the keys of 6 different vehicles, personal protected identifications that were stolen, and an ID that was used to deceive law enforcement.”
