MARFA — The search for a new Marfa ISD School Board member, following the resignation of Ernie Villarreal, wrapped last week with one applicant stepping forth, Genie Wright.
The Monday school board meeting where trustees were slated to review board applicants and fill the position was canceled. A rescheduled date has yet to be announced.
Wright told The Big Bend Sentinel she had not yet been contracted by the district regarding her letter of interest. She said her qualifications include a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education, a law degree, teaching experience and Spanish fluency.
Wright used to work as a sitting judge in Bexar County and now acts as a visiting judge. She said she has been a full-time Marfa resident for the past four years and decided to apply to join the board because she thinks, with her experience, she could be an asset.
“I think I have a skillset that I can offer them,” Wright said. “I’m not here to tell everybody to change or tell them what to do. I’m here to work with them. I’m here to provide my expertise on certain matters.”
