MARFA — The Marfa Police Department is warning residents to be aware of potential scam artists seeking private information by knocking on doors to sell solar power services.
On at least one occasion, a resident informed police that a solar company was asking for their social security number, so the department put out a Facebook notice reminding residents not to give out personal information, said Marfa Police Department Lt. Nichole Fuentes.
The first report from a resident concerned about a door knocker came last Friday. Officers made contact with a salesman who said he worked with Lumio, a power company that sells solar products and services, Fuentes said. Attempts to reach a representative for Lumio to comment were unsuccessful as the company has no published corporate phone numbers, and emails sent to two of its officers were blocked.
However, on Wednesday, two sales reps with Lumio met with police to show they are legitimate and do not ask for personal information. According to police, the reps names are
Kenny Jones and Evan Eastmond and they are driving a silver Nissan Rogue and they stated they will be here through this Saturday. They did have a third person with them but he is no longer In Marfa. Fuentes said she clarified with them that they only ask for name, phone number and an email address if homeowners decide to move forward with the process.
“We believe the call we received about the company asking for social security numbers is another company that we have not yet been able to identify,” Fuentes said. “We just know it is a man and a woman in a Suburban.”
