John McKinley Casler, known to many as Mack, passed away on April 2, 2024, after a tough battle with cancer. Born on October 25, 1950, in El Paso to John and Gladys Casler, Mack enjoyed his hometown days and graduated in 1969 from Burges High School. He worked for the upstart Office Coffee firm for 10 years. In 1972, he married his high school sweetheart, Jodie Kuban, on August 6. In the early ‘80s the couple moved to Holland, Texas, where Mack was a land surveyor as well as the superintendent of city utilities. The late ‘80s found Mack and Jodie moving to Houston where both were employed by UT Health Science Center. Having purchased land in Limpia Crossing in 1987, the couple decided in 1999 to make their home in Fort Davis. Mack was employed by UT’s McDonald Observatory until 2004 and then worked for Jeff Davis County as maintenance manager until retiring in 2009. Known for his generosity, storytelling, his daily trips to town, his love of grilling, chili competitions, his nicknames assigned to many and his willingness to help others throughout the Davis Mountains, Mack will forever be remembered.

Mack is preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Thom Casler.

He is survived by his wife, Jodie, whom Mack lovingly called “Sport”; his brother Joe and wife Mary from Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is planned in the near future.
