MARFA — The official sports season comes to a close for the Shorthorns, with the high school softball, track and golf teams finishing up at the bi-district round and regional competitions the last two weeks of April.

The Lady Horns softball team fought back and forth with Menard Thursday evening in a seven-inning affair, with Marfa falling to the Yellow Jackets 7-13. Highlights for Marfa included sophomore Raven Martinez going 4 of 5 and scoring four times, along with Amaya Gomez getting on base at a perfect 3 of 3, with two hits, two RBIs, and one at-bat ending on an HP. The team brings back seven starters in 2025, four of which will be sophomores next year, and two pitchers in Martinez and Ava Flores who have shared the bulk of the pitching starts this season.

Marfa’s JH Horns ended the track season at the district meet with the young team getting third place in the girls division and second place for the boys division.

Regional Track Meet representatives for Marfa last weekend were the women’s 4×4, 8×2, and sprint relay teams consisting of Ava Flores, Madison Cash, Itzel Urrutia, and anchor, Maryfer Martinez, who has been running the Shorthorns best times this track season.

For the boys division, Ayden Alvarez competed in the discus throw, while Francisco Rosas competed in the 3200M and 1600M run. The Horns bring back all of these athletes next season and will be assisted with this year’s current middle school standouts.
