During the week of May 10 – 14, we will be saluting people of Hispanic Heritage. Many Hispanics have played an important part in our American history. Last week we lost a very important man –– Cesar Chavez.
Mr. Chavez started the National Farm Workers Association in 1962 because he did not like the way migrant workers were treated. Many Hispanics have served America in the military. Many have received honors for their military service.
One true war hero was Private Jose P. Martinez. He was part of the Seventh Army Division that fought during World War II. He was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the lives of the men in his unit during a battle in Japan.
A lot of Hispanics have earned many “firsts” in the history of America. Lauro Cavazos was the first Hispanic to become Secretary of Education, and Manuel Lujan the first Hispanic Secretary of the Interior. The first Hispanic to be the Treasurer of the United States was Katherine Davalos Ortega. There are many, many more Hispanics who have made a difference outside of government. To learn more about these people come by the library. We will help you find books about Hispanic cultures. The Hispanic people are very artistic and fun-loving people. We will be displaying some objects made by people from Mexico. We will also have demonstrations on making pinatas and maracas on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
On Wednesday, May 12, we will have a book review presented by Enrique Rede Madrid. Mr. Madrid translated a book entitled EXPEDITION TO LA JUNTA DE LOS RIOS, 1747-1748. Mr.
Madrid has told me a little bit about this book and it is so interesting. We hope you will make the time to come by and hear his book review. The book review will be at 4 p.m.
On Thursday, we will have storytelling for children of all ages. We hope you can join us. The storytelling will be at 2 p.m. Please look for a poster at the Post Office bulletin board for further details or call the library. We hope you will join us for a fun week here at the library.
