MARFA — When local artist Jeanhee Yu noticed that visitors to Marfa often have to piece together different sources on the web looking for artists and opportunities to see their work and interact with them in town, she decided to collaborate with other artists in building an online directory — a one-stop site showcasing who the local artists are and more about them.

“The intent is to make it easy to find local artists,” Yu said. “These things should be easy, but what I found was that I had to piecemeal things through different sites and organizations.” Yu, together with artists Dim Zayan and Guy Sealey, came up with the idea of actively seeking local artist information and putting it in one place: MarfaMUST at www.marfamust.org (MUST stands for Marfa Untitled Studio Tour). The listing is free of charge.

This week, the directory will only show artists willing to display for their “Untitled Tour” on Friday and Saturday, with suggested hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., although individuals may list different hours. Yu said they will be distributing fliers and maps around town to list the showings as well as including them on the web. After this week the directory will include information on all artists.

The effort is somewhat meant to run in conjunction with the Marfa Invitational events, the annual art fair that brings in visitors from around the world, Yu said. The trio building the directory felt that local creatives should also get a nod during the event.

Yu said there are other ways for artists and artisans to showcase themselves, through the local gallery guide, for example, but that usually only contains information about the commercial galleries.

MarfaMUST is putting out a call for all Marfa artists and artisans to send them the following information if they want to be included in the guide. There is no charge to be included, and MarfaMUST does not charge patrons for the guide or map.
