A recount in the Jeff Davis County sheriff primary runoff left the vote tally the same — 301-300 — with Victor Lopez winning over C.W. Stephens. Lopez, a Republican, has no Democratic challenger in the November General Election and thus, will assume his post in January. The results were posted by Jeff Davis County Clerk Jennifer Wright around 5:20 p.m. Friday.
Sheriffs in Jeff Davis County also serve as tax collector/assessor. Lopez currently serves as a Marfa Police Department officer, and Stephens is a Jess Davis County deputy.
In another one-vote race, Samuel Sanchez — who lost to Deirdre Hisler 123-122 in the Precinct 1 Presidio County Commissioner Democratic Primary runoff — filed for a recount, which will take place tomorrow at the Presidio County Courthouse. The winner in that recount will have no Republican challenger in November and will assume office in January.
