Man stabbed in Alpine Sunday, juvenile arrested
ALPINE — Alpine Police Department officers arrested a 16-year-old juvenile in connection with a Sunday morning stabbing, according to a news release on the department’s Facebook page. Officers were dispatched to the Big Bend Regional Medical Clinic, where they found a 21-year-old man with several stab wounds.
The victim told police the attack happened at the 2000 block of Peach Tree Circle in Alpine, and officers were able to track down and arrest the suspect. Police are withholding the arrested individual’s name because he is a juvenile. Alpine Police Lt. Felipe Fierro identified the victim as Elijah Gongora of Medina. Gongora also is a Sul Ross State University student, he said.
Gongora was airlifted to an El Paso hospital where he was expected to be released, the release said.
Pickup plows through Alpine yard, wrecks into house
ALPINE — A pickup truck left Highway 118 north of Alpine Monday morning, leapt the curb into a yard and burst through fences before smashing a tree stump and hitting a house. The house at 2010 Highway 188 is for sale and unoccupied.
The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office said a report on the incident could take two weeks to complete, although it confirmed that no arrests were made in relation to the crash. But the realtor for the home — Steve Dyer — was at the scene and provided some information. Dyer said someone saw his sign and called him around 6:30 a.m., and when he got there, a white pickup was resting against smashed windows at the front of the house. EMS personnel told him the driver had just left Big Bend Regional Medical Center after being treated for a spider bite, and it was possible he passed out. “The truck plowed through one [chain-link] fence, then another, knocked down a couple of poles, then it hit a huge stump, which probably prevented it from hitting the house at full speed,” Dyer told The Big Bend Sentinel.
Photos posted on Facebook by Dyer showed a path of destruction through the yard and broken windows on the home. Dyer said the driver was gone when he got there, so he was uncertain of any injuries he suffered.
Murder suspect nabbed at Presidio Port of Entry
PRESIDIO — A woman wanted in connection with a shooting at a park in Fort Worth that left one man dead was arrested at the port of entry entering Presidio from Ojinaga on May 30. Abigail Castaneda, 19, of Fort Worth, was arrested on a warrant for murder and taken to Presidio County Jail before being transferred to Tarrant County Jail on June 10, according to sheriff’s department records.
Fort Worth police responded to an injured man in the city’s Rosen Park at 2:15 a.m. on March 15. The man, 25-year-old Gabriel Cardenas Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to his torso, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Fredrick Harris, 19, was also charged with murder in Cardenas’ slaying, and was arrested on unrelated charges in Houston on April 3, according to the Dallas Morning News.
