Kevin Pippen

MARFA — Marfa ISD School Board trustees promoted teacher and coach Kevin Pippen to the role of head football coach this week.

Pippen is a graduate of Marfa ISD and was hired on by the district last year, serving as a high school teacher as well as an assistant high school coach in football, boys basketball and track. Pippen played lineman in high school and was a part of a team that won the playoffs.

Athletic Director Linda Ojeda said Pippen had the opportunity to play under some great coaches as a Marfa ISD athlete and those coaches will continue to support him in his new leadership role. Ojeda said Pippen was mentored last year by previous head football coach Edgar Ramirez, as well as Coach Curtis Pittman, Coach Arturo Alferez and Ojeda, who took notice of Pippen’s goal-oriented nature, attention to detail and maturity.

“He’s proven himself as a player, as a person,” Ojeda said. “He has always shown a lot of responsibility, a lot of commitment, leadership — quiet leadership, I will say, because he’s not one of those that’s just going to be talking. He’s more of a doer.”
