By Roy Morey, Jeff Davis County Democratic Party
Our Jeff Davis County Democratic Party is proud to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States. In a few short days, the vice president secured enough delegate support to win the Democratic nomination, set fundraising records, registered thousands of new voters, generated new grassroots excitement, and changed the course of this election.
She is perfectly positioned to carry forward the remarkable record of the Biden-Harris administration, the most productive since LBJ. Some of the records set:
World’s best post-COVID recovery
Record low unemployment
Record high new jobs created
Record new small businesses opened
Record high stock market
Record domestic energy production
Record (badly needed) investments in infrastructure
Record investments in clean energy
Record low price of insulin
Record low child poverty rate
Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California, in 1964. Her Jamaican-born father became a Stanford University economics professor. Her mother emigrated from India to attend the University of California at Berkeley, and later became a renowned scientist and breast cancer researcher at Berkeley.
Harris attended Howard University and the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law. Later, she became the first female district attorney in San Francisco and first female attorney general of California. Harris won election to the U.S. Senate from California in 2016. President Biden chose Harris in 2020 as his vice-presidential running mate –– the first female vice president in American history.
As vice president, Harris has focused on key issues such as immigration, voting rights and reproductive rights. She has led the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, represented the U.S. on over a dozen foreign trips, and met with more than 150 world leaders to strengthen our global alliances.
Harris is also an accomplished author with three works to her credit. She authored Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer in 2009, which contains her proposals for criminal justice reform. In 2019, she published The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, a life story offering insights into her upbringing and the major influences shaping her life. Also in 2019, she completed Superheroes Are Everywhere, a picture book for kids, which shows them that the power to make the world a better place is inside all of us.
