MARFA — Marfa High School Athletics is gearing up for the fall season with football scrimmages and volleyball games as they prepare for the thick of district play which begins in October.

As the fall sports season kicks into high gear, Marfa High School’s athletic teams are already hard at work, preparing for what promises to be an exciting season. Last week was filled with several key starting points for the Shorthorn football team as they traveled to Fort Davis to take on Buena Vista and the Indians.

With key returning players Derrick Campos, Diego Jurado, Alejandro Rodriguez, and several newcomers in the mix, the team hopes to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016. All eyes are on this year’s squad as they prepare for their season opener on Friday, August 30, against defending 1A state champions Gordon High School at Martin Field during the Marfa Lights Festival. The team has been working tirelessly, sharpening plays and improving their physical conditioning as the coaching staff sees a lot of potential in the young squad, pushing players to their top performance capabilities, preparing them to compete at their highest level. The Shorthorns host Grandfalls and Sanderson on Thursday, as they will scrimmage in front of their hometown crowd beginning at 5 p.m.

The Lady Horns volleyball team shows early season potential at recent tournaments and games, with tournament wins over Van Horn, Andrews JV, Crane and McCamey, which landed them in the silver bracket championship — ultimately dropping the final game to Rankin. Standout performances came in the form of senior outside hitter Loretta Rivera and setter Ava Flores. The duo led the team in points production. Marfa heads to the Van Horn tournament on Friday to take on several 1A and 2A opponents.
