Lady Horns triumph in 5-set thriller against Marathon Mustangs
Marfa’s volleyball team delivered a thrilling performance Tuesday night, claiming victory on the road in a packed Marathon gym. The match went the distance, with Marfa edging out Marathon in a hard-fought five-set battle, gaining crucial momentum as they prepared for their district opener on Saturday.
Marfa was able to win sets one and three with ease, but set five was a true test for the squad in the form of endurance, mental strength, and determination, and the Lady Horns were up for the five set challenge. Critical serves by Itzel Urrutia and timely plays by key players Zoey Salgado, Raven Martinez, senior Loretta Rivera, and Ava Flores were instrumental in Marfa’s win.
Martinez led the Horns in kills, along with Rivera, which had fans watching the duo answer each play with intensity throughout the match. Salgado’s incredible defense, highlighted by multiple point-saving dives, kept Marfa in long rallies, while Flores continued to shine as the team’s leader in assists.
Marfa now looks to extend their winning form as they host Fort Davis this Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Shorthorn Gym.
Football team loses by 1 point
The Shorthorns football team was unable to overcome a late Sanderson surge last Friday night and dropped the game by one point, 43-44. Highlights of the game included several strong runs by Maverick Milligan for the Horns, who finished the night with four touchdowns, 380 yards, and 18 tackles for Marfa.
Diego Jurado continues to be Marfa’s leading blocker, to the benefit of the Shorthorns’ running backs and full backs. Garry Webb had one touchdown and Derick Campos scored two for Marfa.
Marfa will host Grandfalls Friday with junior high starting at 5 p.m. and varsity starting at 7:30 p.m. The varsity game will be preceded by First Responders’ Recognition Night and Elementary Recognition Night.
