Kingston Gonzalez and Dahmari Taylor enjoy their school feast.

MARFA — The school cafeteria was packed last Friday as the community gathered for a Thanksgiving lunch where Marfa ISD served 231 meals to 161 students and 70 adults.

“It was nice to have the families come out and enjoy a meal together at our school cafeteria,” Principal Rosie Martinez said. “Everyone at Marfa ISD played a part in helping serve our students and families. We set up Hibbits Gym with tables and chairs, just in case we didn’t have enough room in the cafeteria. It was a great turn out! We hope to do it again next year.”

Interim Superintendent Arturo Alferez thanked Ms. Martinez for spearheading the initiative and the cafeteria staff for their hard work. He said the Thanksgiving luncheon has taken place in the past but was off schedule due to the COVID-10 pandemic. He said he was glad to see it returning and wanted to continue to host activities that engage both students and parents.

“I want to invite parents back in, I want parents more involved in our school system,” Alferez said. “I need to see students involved, not just on the academic side but also on the social side, knowing that, ‘Hey, this is the reason I come to school. I just don’t come to school to learn how to pass a state test.’”
