MARFA — The Marfa Shorthorns basketball teams are making strides as their 2024 – 2025 season gains momentum. Last Friday, the varsity girls secured a decisive 32-14 victory over Comstock, showcasing an early glimpse of their potential.
However, they faced a tough challenge on Tuesday night at home, falling to Van Horn in a close 25-16 contest.
On the boys side, the varsity team opened the season with back-to-back tough matchups. They started strong against Comstock, a team known for its early-season readiness due to not participating in football — but lost the game with too many turnovers.
However, the now 2A Van Horn Eagles, with a larger roster of players and fresh legs, proved formidable, handing the Shorthorns’ six-player roster a 46-23 loss. Both varsity coaches remain optimistic, emphasizing that early-season rust and conditioning challenges are expected but will fade as the teams settle into week two of practice.
Standout performances: Raven Martinez: 12 points, 17 points, 10 rebounds across two games. Alex Rodriguez: 14 points. Loretta Rivera: 11 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The junior varsity teams also showed promise. The JV Horns narrowly edged Valentine on the road Tuesday, pulling off a thrilling 12-11 victory. Scoring contributions came from Adonise Lujan, Alyssa Hardin, Itzel Urrutia and Lynna Hinojos, who each scored 2 points, while Natasha Labrado led the team with 4 points.
Coaches and players alike look to continue their progress as they take the court for another exciting week of basketball action with a game at Fort Hancock Friday (5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. CST) and on the road Tuesday at Iraan.
