Texas Historical Commission determines Kokernot eligibility

ALPINE — On December 10, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) approved the Determination of Eligibility for Kokernot Field. The approval means that the THC agrees that Kokernot Field is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

The Determination of Eligibility was submitted by Post Oak Preservation Solutions — working on behalf of the city — on November 18. The city hired Post Oak this August to prepare and submit applications to governmental entities with the goal of earning NRHP designation for Kokernot Field and Downtown Alpine.

According to Post Oak partner Ellis Mumford-Russell, the THC said that they “concur it is eligible for listing in the NRHP under Criterion A: Entertainment/Recreation as a significant local venue for semi-pro, collegiate, and youth baseball games for the period 1947-1968.” They also said that it is “a great property.”

Post Oak’s goal is to have a first draft of the National Register Nomination submitted to THC by March. “There are still some hoops to jump through for the final designation, but we can feel assured that the field will be officially listed on the National Register,” Mumford-Russell said.

Post Oak staff will be in the area to perform historic surveys of downtown Alpine in January.
