Christmas Day, 1930

Low temperatures have prevailed in Marfa and the Big Bend Section for the past several days. Hydrants, where exposed, were frozen and milk left out during the night were iced-cream offerings. But the weather has been dry with no rain, sleet or snow and little or no suffering has been reported. “Hoboes” caught in Marfa during the practically zero weather are registering complaints, stating that they are not well taken care of.

Last Friday night about three o’clock, the local jail house was “stormed” and a number of “bums” routed and chased away. When the high Sheriff of the County was approached on the subject he was at first noncommittal. At last he admitted that at least seven Knights of the Road had sought admittance at the county bastille last Friday night between midnight and morning and demanded admittance.

When asked why they didn’t take advantage of the free lodging the city was furnishing such applicants, the spokesman for the party stated that the accommodations were not such as that he had been raised to expect. One of the particular supplicants went so far as to attempt to ascend the stairs of the jail house while the conversation went on below.

Sheriff Bunton and Deputy Hess, it is understood, was compelled to dispatch the ambitious gentlemen with thirty-thirties from the jail grounds.
