MARFA — Marfa’s boys basketball squad shined with an outstanding performance at the Van Horn Tournament last weekend. The Horns outscored the host team, Van Horn, as well as Sierra Blanca and Sanderson, only falling to Tornillo, a competitive 3A school.
The impressive wins and efforts earned Marfa a third-place finish — an accomplishment not achieved in over a decade. Marfa’s offensive production was led by senior standout Derick Campos and veteran Alejandro Rodriguez, whose leadership and skill set the tone for the team’s success. Athletic Director Linda Ojeda praised the team’s determination and commitment. “I’m exceptionally proud of the hard work and performances by our players,” she said. “Head Coach Arron Luna and Assistant Coach Oswaldo Luna have done a phenomenal job in preparing the team for a promising season.”
The team’s achievements at the tournament have set high expectations for the season ahead. The Lady Horns defeated Sierra Blanca at the Van Horn tournament and currently hold a 1-0 district record with last week’s district win over Valentine. The team’s leading scorers and assist leaders are Raven Martinez and Ava Flores.
The teams host Dell City Friday at Marfa Shorthorm Gym at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
