MARFA — Two Marfa chefs have been chosen as semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation’s Chef of the Year: Texas award.

The semifinalists are Michael Anthony Serva, the chef behind the creative Italian sandwiches and dishes at Bordo in Marfa, and Alexandra Gates, executive chef at Cochineal. Gates has been nominated for awards previously and was a semifinalist for the same award last year.

According to the foundation, “The James Beard Awards, considered to be among the nation’s most prestigious honors, recognize exceptional talent in the culinary and food media industries, as well as a demonstrated commitment to creating a culture where all can thrive. 2025 marks an incredible milestone: the 35th anniversary of the James Beard Awards.” Winners will be announced on April 2.
