MARFA — The Marfa-based band Baby Steps announces the digital release of their debut LP, Palace Intrigue, this Friday, January 31, on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms with the vinyl release to follow.

Featuring local residents Mark Scott and JD Garcia and former/sometimes resident Chris Hillen, the group formed in 2016 and began recording in 2019 a few months before the onset of the pandemic and finished the project in true long-distance style via file-sharing and email.

The garage rock/fuzz pop offering features songs titled “Dark Skies Community,” “Naked at the Beach” and “Mitchy Poo.” Adam Bork directed a music video for the album’s lead track, “Art Car.”

The album, recorded locally at Marfa Recording Co. in collaboration with Gory Smelley, who also plays bass on the album, was mixed in Austin and mastered in Lockhart. The vinyl LP will make its way to Big Bend area outlets in March. Record release shows are to be announced, but will likely take place this spring in Marfa, El Paso and Austin.

The digital pre-order sale will end at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, January 30, and is available at: babystepsmarfa.bandcamp.com/album/palace-intrigue.
