MARFA — The Marfa Shorthorns boys’ basketball team has clinched its second consecutive district championship and is on the verge of making history with an undefeated district title — something the program hasn’t achieved in over 17 years.
Entering the season with a young and determined mindset, the Horns overcame significant challenges, including the loss of four starters to graduation in 2024 and two players to injury this year. With only two returners from last season’s roster, first-year head coach Arron Luna embraced the challenge, leaning on junior Alejandro Rodriguez and senior Derick Campos to lead the squad. Their efforts, along with a developing team-first mentality, have helped Marfa find its rhythm and step up in key moments.
In the championship game, the Shorthorns faced a tough battle against visiting Balmorhea, with both teams exchanging leads throughout. In the fourth quarter, Marfa’s defense took control, thanks to the efforts of Garry Webb and Asael Zubia, who shut down Balmorhea’s second-chance opportunities with strong rebounding and defensive stops. Webb and Zubia also contributed with key steals, contested shots and assists, helping Marfa secure a hard-fought 57-49 victory.
With one game left in district play, a win on Friday at Terlingua would mark Marfa’s first undefeated district championship since 2008.
Leading scorers:
• Alejandro Rodriguez – 20
• Garry “Gopher” Webb – 11
• Austin McGary – 9
• Asael Zubia – 6
• Derick Campos – 4
