MARFA — The Marfa Shorthorns wrapped up district basketball play in dominant fashion Friday night, securing a double-digit road victory over Terlingua.
On the boys’ side, Alejandro Rodriguez once again spearheaded the attack, with strong contributions from Austin McGary who had numerous offensive putbacks. For the Lady Horns, Zoey Salgado led the offensive charge with 14 points, followed by Raven Martinez with 10 and Ava Flores with 8.

Both Shorthorn teams clinched spots in the UIL State Playoffs. The Lady Horns faced Buena Vista in the bi-district round on Tuesday but fell short, 20-44, ending their postseason run. Marfa’s scoring efforts came from Raven Flores, Loretta Rivera, Zoey Salgado, and Madison Cash, each with 4 points, while Ava Flores added 3 and Janayah Villa contributed 2. Flores also tallied 5 assists for Marfa. Despite the playoff exit, the Lady Horns conclude their season with a promising 15-7 record as head coach Kevin Pippen looks to build on this year’s success moving forward. Marfa will return most of their roster next year but bid farewell to seniors Loretta Rivera and Janayah Villa, both four-year members of the program.

The Shorthorns boys now turn their focus to the bi-district round, where they will take on Rankin in Fort Stockton on Monday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. as Marfa looks to keep its playoff hopes alive.
