MARFA — The Marfa Studio of Arts will be hosting an exhibition by two photographers, Bob Anderson and Edward Kawecki. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on Sunday, March 9, from 3-6 p.m. The community is invited to meet the artists and enjoy this stunning work by two exceptional photographers.
Marfa and the Big Bend Area have long been a place that has attracted artists from all over the country and the world. The stark beauty of the landscape and unique blended culture provides inspiration that is unlike any other place. These two photographers bring their acute eyes to the area and document its rarity through two distinct series of works.
Bob Anderson, originally from Glasgow, Scotland emigrated to Canada where he still lives half of the year. Over 35 years, he worked as an assignment photographer in North America and Europe while also working on personal photographic projects. Now he travels the long distance from Canada annually to spend his winter encamped in an airstream east of Marfa. His past work has chronicled the iconic West Texas ranching culture from cattle drives to family gatherings. The work in this exhibition, however, is titled Mistaken Identity, turning to capture the unexpected moments and images of Marfa that many would walk past, but a photographer’s eye would linger. These elegant images are printed with a dye sublimation on Chromaluxe aluminum panels, giving them a crisp definition unique to the process.
Edward Kawecki was born in the Northern region of Poland in a town called Elblag. He attended University SGGW in Warsaw earning a master’s degree in human nutrition. His childhood love of photography brought him back to the medium and he became a photojournalist and advertising photographer. His passion for capturing the world through photography encouraged him to travel extensively and chronicle his visions. He has lived and worked in the United States for many years interspersed with return visits to Poland. In 2015, he came to Marfa to work at Marfa Maid Dairy as a herdsman for their goat farm. During that time Kawecki began to photograph the Big Bend Region. He returned many times to Marfa and now lives in the town where he finds the light and local plants a springboard for his formal abstractions in a series called Plantinium.
The exhibition runs from March 5 to April 26 with gallery hours Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. The MSA Gallery is located at 106 East San Antonio in Marfa.
