MARFA — The local sandlot baseball team Los Yonke Gallos de Marfa invite the public to a home run derby at 7 p.m. this Saturday, March 8, at Coffield Park.
Everyone is welcome. A $10 buy-in gets batters 10 outs. Hot dogs available while supplies last. All proceeds go towards a new scoreboard, which has been inoperable for many years, at the Gallos home field Vizcaino Park.
The Gallos are under new leadership with players Jerram Rojo and Cody Bjornson stepping in to co-manage the team after the resignation of Nick Bustillos.
Bjornson said fixing the old scoreboard — a process that involves county collaboration — is one of their top priorities. Without a working scoreboard, players and ballgame attendees have had to rely on announcers, which may or may not be available, to know game standings.
“This initiative is about improving the park we play at and creating a more well-rounded baseball experience for the players and the community,” Bjornson said.
Rojo said the Gallos are “hoping to stir up the community and its love for the game of baseball” with Saturday’s home run derby and the upcoming season. The Gallos first game is coming up on March 15 at Kokernot Field where they will take on the Alpine A’s and the newly-formed Alpine Cattle Dogs.
