Marfa Lady Shorthorns claim District 9 Championship, boys team heads to regionals

The Marfa Lady Shorthorns golf team is once again District 9 champions, with district champion Maryfer Martinez leading the team’s efforts with a district-best score of 107. Loretta River (111), Ava Flores (131), Amaya Gomez (141), and Dariela Munoz Martinez (143) rounded out the team’s scores for a total of 490. The Lady Shorthorns now head to Abilene on Sunday for their practice round at the regional tournament, with play set to begin on Monday at Abilene’s Maxwell Course.

The Shorthorns boys golf team finished as this year’s district runner-up, led by Asael Zubia with a score of 97. He was joined by Garyth Diego Jurado (98), Ayden Alvarez (103), Sammy Estrada (109), and Alex Rodriguez (113). The boys’ team will tee off at regionals in Abilene at Maxwell Golf Course on Wednesday, April 16.

Lady Horns softball team eyes state playoffs

The Marfa Lady Horns softball team will travel to Western Texas College on Thursday afternoon to face the Ira Lady Bulldogs in a crucial doubleheader. The games, scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., are must-wins for the Lady Horns if they hope to qualify for the state playoffs.

Track team competes at area meet

Marfa’s track team competed at the area track meet in Rankin on Wednesday, with field events 

held in the morning and running events and relays taking place in the afternoon. As of press time, results were still pending. Both the boys and girls teams have several athletes competing for spots at the regional meet, which will be held next Friday and Saturday in Abilene.

Little League Tigers claim 1st win of the season

Marfa’s Little League Lady Tigers secured their first win of the season on Tuesday evening with a 11-7 victory over their Alpine opponents. The team, coached by George Salgado, Samantha Salgado and Coach Fernandez, was led by strong pitching performances from Aubrey Ceniceros and Liliana Zubia. The defense was solid, with key plays from infielders Mia Rosas, Dania Fernandez, Jerika Rodriguez, Amaya Fuentez and Adeline Marquez. The Tigers’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday in Marfa.

Junior High softball and basketball teams in action

Marfa’s Junior High softball and basketball teams will host Van Horn and Fort Davis in Marfa on April 17, with games starting at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Junior High Lady Horns softball team will travel to Wink on Saturday, April 12, for tournament action. Their games are scheduled for 9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 4 p.m.
