FORT DAVIS — Do you know about the Camel Experiment of the U.S. Army in the 1850s in Fort Davis? Wednesday, May 14, will be a double treat for children of the county when they visit Doug Baum and his camels at the Fort Davis National Historic Site and hear more about them from Kathi Appelt, author of Once Upon A Camel, from College Station.

Youngsters of the Dirks-Anderson Elementary will have an assembly at 9 a.m. that day when Appelt will give a presentation followed by an additional program in the Jeff Davis County Library at 11 a.m. for students of Valentine Elementary — along with homeschoolers. Children’s art depicting camels will be on display in the main community space of the library. Free bookmarks and a handout, “Fun Facts About Camels,” will be given to the students to take home.

Partnering with staff at Fort Davis NHS, Baum will be giving living history presentations on May 14 and 15  at the fort to allow visitors extra time. Appelt will hold a “Meet and Greet the Author” event at Front Street Books in Alpine on May 12 to highlight her children’s book, Once Upon a Camel.  Everyone is invited to attend.
