MARFA — The Marfa Shorthorns junior high baseball and softball teams will conclude their seasons this Thursday with a doubleheader in Van Horn. The boys will take the field at 4 p.m., followed by the girls at 5 p.m.
Both teams have shown tremendous growth throughout the season. The baseball roster of 17 and the softball roster of 12 continue to gain valuable experience as Marfa works to rebuild its junior high programs in order to translate into the high school division. The baseball team is especially notable, as this is the program’s first season in over 13 years. Meanwhile, the softball program is steadily regaining numbers after previous declines in participation.
This year’s baseball squad features a strong defensive lineup, with Francisco Muñoz, Allan Martinez, Tayvian Valenzuela, Landyn Baeza, Adiel Zubia, and Miguel Rey anchoring the infield. Outfielders Seth Nunez, Eduardo Lara, Axel Urrutia, and Ty Bejaran have also made key plays throughout the season, helping solidify the team’s overall performance.
On the softball side, eighth-graders Liliana Zubia, Adeline Marquez, and Jerika Rodriguez have led the offense, with strong contributions from seventh-grader Alayna Vasquez. The Lady Shorthorns also boast a standout sixth-grade group, with Aubrey Ceniceros and Dania Fernandez leading the team in pitching, supported by teammates Mia Rosas and Jade Martinez as offensive and defensive contributors.

Several Marfa players were recently recognized for their outstanding performance this season:

- Ava Flores – First Team All-District
Madison Cash – Second Team All-District
Giselle Torres, Dariela Muñoz, and Zoey Salgado – Honorable Mention
