MARFA — The Greasewood Gallery at the Hotel Paisano will be presenting 11 paintings by Marfa resident Pat Meckfessel in a show entitled 11•4•11/11, running from May 16 – June 22.
The exhibition title references the date and hour of the World War I Armistice and conveys impressions formed during a personal visit in 2022 to the battlefields of Verdun and the Somme.
Once stark scenes of savagery, the battlefields are now mostly farms and meadows, interlaced with ruins of forts and trenches. Nevertheless, a consciousness of what happened there infuses everything. This series of paintings reflects the artist’s search for a deeper understanding of the First World War, combining her research, her firsthand perception, and her surprise at finding beauty in what is inherently haunting.
The opening reception is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 16.
