PRESIDIO — In a region where preventive care is often out of reach, a mobile mammography campaign coordinated by the Big Bend Regional Hospital District (BBRHD) is bringing potentially lifesaving breast cancer screenings to women across Presidio and Brewster counties.

In partnership with Assured Imaging, the tour recently delivered services to 193 women, offering vital access to care in one of Texas’ most medically underserved areas. The response highlights the demand for care and the effectiveness of culturally resonant outreach.

The campaign featured bilingual staff, promotional materials in Spanish and English, and a collaboration with trusted local partners and community clinics to help spread the word. Many residents said it was the first time mammography felt accessible, both logistically and emotionally.

“This program proves that when we meet people where they are geographically and culturally, they show up,” said Lynette Brehm, executive director of Big Bend Regional Hospital District. “We designed this effort with our communities in mind, responding to the request to bring back mobile mammography.”

Big Bend Regional Hospital District partnered with Assured Imaging, a subsidiary of Rezolut Imaging, to operate the mobile unit. As an integrated provider of women’s imaging services, Assured Imaging’s mission is to support primary care and OB/GYN partners in screening every patient for breast cancer. Their mobile coaches are staffed by fellowship-trained radiologists and experienced mammography technologists, ensuring a high standard of care.

Early detection saves lives

According to the American Cancer Society’s 2025 projections, 316,950 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. In 2025, an estimated 23,880 women in Texas will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to Susan G. Komen.

While early detection offers a 99% five-year survival rate for localized breast cancers, that rate plummets with late-stage diagnoses — an outcome far more common in rural communities due to limited access.
