MARFA — Three people were transported to the Big Bend Regional Medical Center this morning after a 7:40 a.m. crash at the four-way stop in Marfa on San Antonio and Highland streets. The three individuals were in stable condition on Thursday afternoon, according to Marfa EMS Director Jessie Peña.

Marfa PD Lieutenant Nichole Fuentes, who is investigating the crash, said two cars were traveling north when one hit the other from the rear at the four-way stop. The vehicle that was hit, a black Suburban, contained four Presidio residents. They were struck by a gray truck driven by an off-duty Border Patrol agent in his personal vehicle.

Photos of the vehicle that was struck — and the fact that neither of the vehicles involved in the crash were drivable and had to be towed away — indicate that the agent was driving at a speed atypical of a vehicle approaching a stop sign. The off-duty agent and two Presidio residents, who sustained minor injuries, per Fuentes, were transported to the hospital after the incident.

It is currently unclear what the cause of the crash was, Fuentes said, but the state of the driver who hit the Suburban is in question. “I can’t confirm it because I don’t know the medical record side of it, but it seems like something happened — that it wasn’t something that was an accident where he was just speeding,” she said. “I think there was some type of medical emergency…or something of that nature.”

The Marfa Police Department, Marfa EMS, Marfa Volunteer Fire Department, TxDOT, Presidio County Sheriff’s Department and Border Patrol were the responding agencies.
